Speech writing is an art of conveying a message to your audience. Either through oral
communication or through other means, such as powerpoint slides. Speech writing has
the same function as normal writing.

A good speech should have the following characteristics:
G Audience-Oriented: The speaker must deliver the speech in such a way as desired

                  by the audience.

G Interesting: A good speech is always interesting. Quotations and humours make a
speech vivid and interesting. An interesting speech always wins the attention of the
                  audience.

G Clear: A speech should convey the message, ideas or emotions, facts or arguments of
                  the speaker to the audience.

G Well-Organised: The points of a speech should be organised in a logical sequence to
attract and retain the attention of the audience.
G Vivid and Concrete: Include facts in a concrete and comprehensive way. Irrelevant

matter should not be included in a speech.

G Brevity: Speech should be short and concrete.
G Dynamic: There must be variation in style, tone, voice, approach depending on the
situation, otherwise audience will lose their attention.

G Authentic: The facts and figures presented in a speech must be authentic and true.

False statement or information misleads the audience and hampers the acceptability
                  of the speech.
G Free from Error: Error in speech can make the audience confused and have a bad

impact on the personality of the speaker.
We will now look at the following speeches:

                                                         1. Cleanliness

Good morning respected principal, teachers and my dear friends. At this event, I would
like to deliver a speech on cleanliness. I am very thankful to my class teacher that he has

selected me. It is a serious topic and needs high level of social awareness. People in the
developed countries (Western Europe and North America) never depend on the
authorities as they never litter their roads or surrounding areas. We too have to take such
