An article is a piece of structured and well-framed writing usually intended for
publication in newspapers, magazines or journals. It is written for a vast audience, so it is
essential that is should attract and retain the reader’s attention. It may include amusing
stories, reported speech and descriptions.
It can be formal or informal, depending on the target audience. It should be written in an
interesting manner. It should give opinions and thought, as well as facts. It is in a less
formal style than a report.
An article can:
G offer suggestion
G provide information
G present an opinion or a balanced argument
G describe an experience, event, person or place
G compare and contrast
G offer advice
An article should consists of:
G an eye-catching title which attracts the reader’s attention and suggests the slot of the
article. Articles can also have subheadings before each paragraph.
G an introduction which clearly defines the topic to be covered and keeps the reader’s
attention.
G the main body of two to five paragraphs in which the topic is further explained in
detail.
G the conclusion which is summarising the topic.
Before you begin writing an article, it is important to consider:
G Where is the article going to appear – in a newspaper or a magazine.
G Who are the intended readers – a specific group such as students or teenagers or
adults in general.
G What is the aim of the article – to advise, suggest, inform, compare and contrast,
describe, etc.
