A notice is a written or printed announcement. It is generally written in a formal tone.
Notices are factual and to the point. The language used is simple and formal not flowery.
A notice should include the following:
G The name of the organisation issuing the notice.
G The heading ‘NOTICE’.
G A heading to introduce the subject of the notice.
G The date.
G The body of the notice.
G The writer’s signature, name and designation.
A well written notice must inform the readers about the 5 W’s.
G What is going to happen?
G Where it will take place?
G When it will take place?
G Who is eligible for it?
G Whom to contact (that is, the issuing authority)?
Following points should be remembered while writing a notice:
G Standard abbreviations are allowed.
G The sentences should be precise and grammatically correct.
G They should be in the passive voice.
G The notice should be presented within a box.
G Information given in a notice must be clear and should not cause any confusion.
G A notice must be appealing–it should attract the reader’s attention at once.
G Increase the visual appeal of your notice by using bold letters, catchy slogans,
striking words and phrases, etc.
Read and learn the following notices.
1. Ashima Khatri is the head girl of Queens Marry School, Pitampura. She and some
other students of the school are touched by the plight of the poor and the destitute
in the state-run homes and wish to make a difference in their lives by lessening
their sufferings. They decide to raise funds for this purpose. Write a notice not
exceeding 50 words making an appeal for generous donations.
