A paragraph is a group of sentences organised around a central topic.

The characteristics of a good paragraph are as under:
             1. Unity: It denotes that there is only one theme in the paragraph.

             2. Coherence: It denotes that all the sentences are well-connected to each other and
                   to the central theme.
             3. Emphasis: It implies that the supporting details are given in order of their

                   importance.

             4. Variety: It shows that sentences should be of different types and lengths to avoid
                   monotony and boredom.

             5. Ending: It suggests that the paragraph should end with a sentence which concludes
the whole passage and provides support for the topic sentence.

Read and understand the following paragraphs.

                                                  1. A Journey to the Moon

Moon is thousands of kilometres away from the earth. It is one-fourth of the size of the
earth. American astronaut, Neil Armstrong was the first to step on the surface of the
moon. He remained there for some time. He brought with him samples of soil from the

moon. The American government sent a handful of it to the laboratories of all the
countries for testing. The idea of travelling to the moon is thrilling. But, it is not as much
beautiful as it looks from the earth. There are rocks and rocks of powdery mass. It is
without any vegetation. No one lives there. On reaching there, one feels bored. A
journey to the moon is okay, but there is no place better than our mother earth.

                                                      2. An Ideal Teacher

An ideal teacher must possess some extra-ordinary qualities. He/She should be the role
model for the students. He/She must be a great scholar and should be the master of the

subject he teaches. He/She must be able to communicate his/her ideas easily, but
effectively. He/She must be sincere and hard working. He/She must be punctual, strict as
well as affectionate. He/She should possess the quality so as to motivate children, create
curiosity for knowledge and inspire them to become a better human being.

                                                                  118
