A. Read the passage about Meghalaya and answer the questions that follow.
Meghalaya is a state in North-East India. Meghalaya continued to be a part of Assam
even after the independence of India. It was declared as a separate state on 21st
January, 1972. It is one of the seven sister states of North-East India. It has rich deposits
of limestone, coal, uranium, etc. The literal meaning of the term ‘Meghalaya’ in
Sanskrit is ‘Abode of Clouds’. The majority of the people in Meghalaya are tribals.
The largest tribal community are the Khasi people. The population of Meghalaya as
of 2016 is estimated to be 3,211,474. Meghalaya is the 23rd most populous state of
India. Around 70% of the people in Meghalaya practise Christianity as their religion.
Around 13% practise Hinduism, while 4% practise Islam. English is the official
language of Meghalaya. Khasi and Garo are additional languages. The Mawsynram
town in Khasi Hills holds the world record of having the highest rainfall. Meghalaya
is surrounded by Assam and Bangladesh in the north and south, respectively. The
capital of Meghalaya is Shillong. It is one of the most popular hill stations in India.
The best time to visit Meghalaya is between the months of March and July.
Nongkrem Dance, Wangala and Behdienkhlam are the major festivals in Meghalaya.
