A paragraph is a self contained unit of a discourse in writing dealing with a
particular point or idea.

G A paragraph should have at least 50-60 words.

G A paragraph has a topic sentence. A paragraph has:
• a topic sentence
G Each sentence relates to a single idea about the
• supporting sentences
main topic. • a concluding sentence

G Paragraph explains or describes something.

Following are some examples of paragraphs given below. Read them carefully.

1. Pollution : A Great Threat

The term ‘pollution’ has gained wider significance in recent years. Pollution refers
to the release of chemical or substances into the environment that is injurious for

human, animal and plant life. The water, air, noise and other forms of pollution in
one terminology is known as the pollution of the eco-system. The principal cause

behind this pollution is ‘exploitation of nature’. The environmental laws across the
globe make an attempt to control pollution. But people are accustomed to break
the law. Since, we all know the causes of these hazards, we should behave
responsibly towards the environment as an attempt to control pollution.

2. Aim of My Life

Everybody should have an aim in life. I want to become a doctor. There are several

reasons for my choice. The profession of a doctor is noble. He renders a valuable
service to the suffering humanity. If I become a doctor, I can earn a lot of money. I
will also distribute free medicines to poor patients without charging fees. I will

educate people for maintaining hygiene and cleanliness. If everything goes
according to my plan, I must become a good doctor. I wish my sweet dream would
be fulfilled.
