must like mother. My mother is a very nice lady so that should’t be
difficult. If she is career-oriented and wants to take up a job, that’s okay
by me and if she isn’t, that’s okay too. We are quite well off, actually, so
she doesn’t need to work unless she wants to. Oh! And I don’t know how
to say this, but I’m looking for someone with beautiful eyes.
Amma : Well, my brother-in-law must have been thinking of my girls when he
asked you to come and see me. My daughters are very good-tempered
girls and there’s nothing they don’t know about running a house. They
are kind and gentle and take such good care of me. And they’re very
pretty girls, don’t you think? So lovely and elegant . And I’m sure you’ve
noticed that they both have the most incredibly beautiful eyes.
Rajkumar : Yes. But, they might not like Rajpur, it’s a small town and there’s nothing
much there apart from the palace. They might get very bored.
Amma : You don’t know my girls they never get bored. They are always busy with
something or the other – if they aren’t knitting, they’re sewing; if they
aren’t reading, they’re singing; if they aren’t gardening, they’re very
contented with whatever they have. Why don’t you talk to them yourself?
Rajkumar : Well, okay.
Amma : Talk to Moti first. She’s the older one. (calling out) Moti, come here.
Moti comes in, still looking coy; she has changed her clothes and is now wearing her newest
suit in the very latest fashion.
Amma : Rajkumar wants to talk to you, child. I’ll leave you alone.
(She goes away) elegant : graceful and attractive
Moti sits down on a chair and looks bashfully at Rajkumar. incredibly : unbelievably
Rajkumar : Er....... I’m Rajkumar and I’m from Rajpur. I know your uncle. He asked
me to visit you.
Moti : Uhm, I don’t know him.
Rajkumar : Yes, he told me he hadn’t met you. He wanted to know if you would like
to visit him in Rajpur.
Moti : Isn’t Rajpur a little village? What would I do there?
Rajkumar : Well, your aunt is very nice person and you could help her around the
house. She’s got a good garden – if you like gardening, you’ll love
the place.
