Lambi : Ma told me that I shouldn’t mind that.
Rajkumar : There is’nt much to do there. Do you like gardening?
Lambi : Ma told me that it’s a good hobby.
Rajkumar : You won’t get bored?
Lambi : So long as I can watch television or go to the cinema sometimes.
Rajkumar : But, Rajpur doesn’t have a cinema theatre and your uncle doesn’t have a
television set in his house. He doesn’t like television, he thinks it should
be banned.
Lambi : (horrified) Ban television? What on the earth would we do all day if
there’s no television?
Rajkumar : Well, you could knit or sew or read books or sing or garden or cook.
Lambi : (looking more and more horrified) My goodness! Me cook? (laughs)
Mother won’t expect me to cook, whatever happens.
Rajkumar : (Laughing with her) If you’re visiting your aunt often, she’ll teach you
how to cook. It’s not all that difficult. She taught me how to cook.
Lambi : You mean to say you cook? Why on the earth do you need to cook? Don’t
you have someone to do that for you?
Rajkumar : My mother says you have to learn to be self-reliant . She expects me to do
my fair share of work in the house.
Lambi : (looking horrified again) Your mother expects you to cook?
Rajkumar : Yes.
self-reliant : able to do
Lambi : Really? Look, I have to talk to Amma urgently,
things by yourself rather
you don’t mind if I run away, do you? than depending on other
Rajkumar : Not at all, I’ll be all right by myself for a while. people for help
He settles down with his magazine, looking even more pleased with life. Amma comes in.
Amma : Well, that’s that, Lambi told me about your conversation. It’s such a pity
that you don’t suit each other.
Rajkumar : I know, it’s really a pity. Don’t you know any other suitable girl?
Amma : (sounding doubtful) Well, I suppose I could ask my friends.....
Rajkumar : Your borther-in-law told me that you have a niece staying with
you....his.... your husband’s younger sister’s daughter.
Amma : Oh her? She won’t suit you at all.
