A little later, kitchen in the same house Chaambali stirring something on stove.

Amma : Chaambali, O Chaambali! Where is the girl? She’s never there when I
want her.

Enters Chaambali, holding a broom.

Chaambali : Here I am, Amma. You asked me to wash out the courtyard.

Amma : That was hours ago. You’re so slow, how will my work ever get done on
time?
Chaambali : But Amma ...... it was only ten minutes .... and it is a large courtyard.

Amma : And I suppose you have a watch to tell the time. If I say it was hours ago,

then it was hours ago. Don’t argue with me. dawdle : to take a long time
Chaambali : I’m sorry, Ma. to do something

Amma : Finish washing the courtyard and don’t dawdle over it. And make sure
you don’t miss the corners behind the pots. Then, come and make some

rotis. It’s almost lunch–time. Moti, Lambi, what do you want for lunch?
Moti : I’d like some rice with mushrooms.

Lambi : I had a very late breakfast, so I don’t feel very hungry. I’ll just have some
soup. And may be some fruits.

Do you have to do
Amma : Now, go away girl and do your work.
household chores?
Chaambali starts to leave.

Moti : Get me my book from that chair before you go. I’m so bored. I wish the
TV hadn’t broken down.

Lambi : Chaambali, get me the walkman from my room, will you? And the new
Spice Girls cassette. When will the repairman bring our televison back,
Amma? It’s so boring without televison.

Exits Chaambali.

Amma : Tomorrow, my darling. But, you shouldn’t be so dependent on television,
you know. What will you do if you get married and have to live in a place
that doesn’t have cable TV?

Moti and Lambi : A place without cable TV? Are there really places like that? I could never
live in a place like that.
