            Example  :           Arrange  8732,  4536,  8543,  9289  and  1326  in  descending

                                 order.

            Solution  :          9289, 8732, 8543, 4536, 1326

            Formation of Greatest and Smallest Numbers


            Greatest Number

            Consider the following.


            Form the greatest number using the digits 6, 3, 8, 7.

            To form the greatest number, arrange the digits in descending order.

                                                        8 > 7 > 6 > 3


            Hence, the greatest number is 8763.

            Procedure of forming the greatest number.

            H      The smallest digit is placed at ones place.


            H      The next greater digit is placed at tens place.

            H      The next greater digit is placed at hundreds place and so on.

            H      The greatest digit is placed at the highest place of the number.


            Example  :           Form the greatest numbers using the given digits.

                                 a. 8, 4, 6, 3                       b. 3, 2, 6

            Solution  :          a.      We have the digits : 8, 4, 6, 3


                                         Arrange them in descending order.

                                         8 > 6 > 4 > 3

                                         Hence, the greatest number is 8643.


                                 b.      We have the digits : 3, 2, 6

                                         Arrange them in descending order.

                                         6 > 3 > 2


                                         Hence, the greatest number is 632.
