Successor and Predecessor
The number which comes just after a particular number is called its
successor.
The successor of a whole number is one more than the given number and is
obtained by adding 1 to it.
The successor of 0 is 1, successor of 1 is 2; successor of 2 is 3 and so on.
The number which comes just before a particular number is called its
predecessor.
The predecessor of a whole number is one less than the given number and
is obtained by subtracting 1 from it.
The predecessor of 1 is 0; predecessor of 2 is 1; predecessor of 3 is 2 and so on.
Example : Find the successor and the predecessor for each of the
following whole numbers.
a. 1199 b. 1000 c. 4000
Solution : a. 1199
The successor of 1199 is
1199 + 1 = 1200
The predecessor of 1199 is
1199 – 1 = 1198
b. 1000
The successor of 1000 is
1000 + 1 = 1001
The predecessor of 1000 is
1000 – 1 = 999
c. 4000
The successor of 4000 is
4000 + 1 = 4001
The predecessor of 4000 is
4000 – 1 = 3999
