G A group of words which modifies a verb and does the work of an adverb is called an
adverb phrase.
Read the following examples:
1. Not long ago I lived here.
2. Whenever I remember you , I smile.
Clause
A clause is a group of words that forms part of a sentence and has a subject and a finite
verb of its own. A clause has only one finite verb in it.
Read the following examples:
1. I like what I see .
2. Whoever painted that picture is a real genius.
Types of Clauses
There are four types of clauses. They are:
Main and Subordinate Clause Noun Clause
Adjective Clause Adverb Clause
G A main clause is a clause that can stand on its own. It is also known as principal clause .
Read the following example:
I like banana.
This sentence has one subject - and one finite verb - I like . It also conveys complete
meaning and can stand on its own. So, it is a main or principal clause.
Now, read this sentence:
I first met her in London where I lived as a small child.
The above sentence consists of two clauses.
· I first met her in London (can stand on its own – hence principal clause).
· Where I lived (cannot stand on its own – hence subordinate clause).
G A subordinate clause that acts as a noun in a sentence is called a noun clause .
Read the following examples:
1. Give him what he wants .
2. My greatest asset is that I have a true friend .
