A simple sentence is one which has only one subject and one finite verb.
A compound sentence is one that is made up of two or more co-ordinate
clauses. A complex sentence is one that is made up of one principal clause
and one or more subordinate clauses.
In front of the following sentences write what type of sentence it is:
1. My dog is called Spot. ________
2. My dog is called Spot and he liked chewing bones. ________
3. The cat came round the corner, swishing its tail. ________
4. Although I am tall, I could not reach the top shelf. ________
5. Chantal is my best friend. ________
6. My best friend is called Chantal but she lives a long way from me. ________
7. I want to learn to swim and I would like to go horse-riding. ________
8. Ikram had to go to bed, even though he was not tired. ________
9. The football game, which took place on Sunday, was excellent. ________
10. James fell off his bicycle. ________
G A sentence which has only one finite verb in it or it is made up of only one clause is
called a simple sentence .
Read the following examples:
1. Pratham and his friend Sarthak had planned to return to Mumbai.
2. None of the other classmates asked me to change my hostel.
G A sentence which is made up of two or more principal or main clauses is called a
compound sentence. The clauses of a compound sentence are called co-ordinate clauses.
Read the following example:
Harpreet wrote a story and her teacher corrected her mistakes.
The above sentence is made up of two clauses:
1. Harpreet wrote a story. 2. Her teacher corrected her mistakes.
