A phrase is a group of words without a subject-verb component while a
clause is also a group of words but containing a subject and verb.
Circle the ‘predicate’. Underline the subject. Double underline the
‘phrase’.
1. While on spring vacation, Alex built a model airplane.
2. While gluing on a wing, he found that he was missing a piece.
3. When he looked for the piece, Alex could not find it anywhere.
4. On his way to the store, Alex thought about the missing airplane piece.
5. After he bought a new piece, Alex worked on his airplane again.
A phrase is a group of words that makes sense but, not a complete sense. A phrase may
consist of one word or more than one word.
Read the following examples:
1. I like reading comics .
2. He always speaks in a polite manner .
Types of Phrases
There are three types of phrases. They are:
Noun Phrase Adjective Phrase Adverb Phrase
G A group of words which works as a noun in a sentence is called a noun phrase .
Read the following examples:
1. The glistening snow covered the mountain peak.
2. I did not watch my favourite serial .
G A group of words that qualifies a noun and does the work of an adjective is called an
adjective phrase.
