5. Rules for Reporting Questions
The introductory verb is changed to ask, inquire, demand or some other word having a
similar meaning.
G When the direct question has a yes or no for an answer, or if whether is used
after the introductory verb.
The conjunction ‘that’ is not used after asked or while reporting -wh questions.
Also keep in mind that the interrogative form is changed into a declarative form.
Read the following examples:
1. Direct : He said to me, “Why don’t you speak Gujarati?”
Indirect : He asked me why I didn’t speak Gujarati.
2. Direct : He said to me, “Do you speak Gujarati?”
Indirect : He asked me I spoke Gujarati.if
6. Commands and Requests
G The reporting verb ‘said to’ is changed according to the mood or sense of the
sentence given in the reported speech.
G The imperative mood is changed into infinitive mood by placing ‘to’ before the
verb.
Read the following examples:
1. Direct : Teacher said to me, “Get out of the class.”
Indirect : Teacher asked me to get out of the class.
2. Direct : He said to me, “Do the exercise.”
Indirect : He told me to do the exercise.
7. Exclamation and Wishes
G The introductory verb is changed into wish exclaim pray cry bless, , , , or some
other similar verb.
G The sign of exclamation is omitted.
G The words of exclamation like alas hurray wow, , , etc. are omitted.
Read the following examples:
1. Direct : Harpreet said , “Hurrah! We have won the match.”
Indirect : Harpreet exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.
2. Direct : She said to me, “Happy Bihu!”
Indirect : She wished me happy Bihu.
