We will now study the highest degree of comparison – Superlatives .
G Superlative forms are used when we have to compare more than two things.
Read the following examples:
1. Fauja Singh is the oldest runner of Indian origin.
2. Komal has the most beautiful voice in the entire school.
Let us now learn to make the Superlative Forms.
G Superlative forms are formed by adding -est or by using most . -est is added to the
short words. With longer words, we use most . However, some words are irregular
and follow no pattern. We have to remember the superlative forms of such words.
Read the following examples:
much / many - most less - least
expensive - most expensive careful - most careful
big - biggest fat - fattest
good - best bad - worst
G We always use definite article the before the superlative forms.

the fastest bowler
the most beautiful painting
G After superlatives, we use with places and in of with the periods of time.
Read the following examples:
1. Russia is the largest country in the world .
2. Today is the hottest day of the season .
G Sometimes most is used which means very .
Read the following examples:
1. The book you gave me was most interesting .
(It means very interesting)
2. Thank you for all your gift. It was most kind of you.
(It means very kind)
Keep in mind that, the is not used before superlatives in the above sentences where
most means very.
