Pronoun
A pronoun is a word which is used instead of a noun. A pronoun is used instead of a noun
to avoid repetition of a noun in an essay.
For example:
she, he, they, it, her, him, its, etc.
Pronouns are classified into the following types.
Personal pronoun refers to a specific person or object or group of things directly.
A personal pronoun describes a person or a thing in the following ways.
1st person (the person who speaks) e.g. I, we, me, us
2nd person (the person who spoken to) e.g. you
3rd person (a person or a thing which is spoken about) e.g. she, he, they, it, her, him, them
For example:
She is an intelligent teacher. They were going to market.
Possessive pronoun describes a close possession or an ownership of a relationship to a
noun (a person or a thing).
For example:
This book is yours . This laptop is mine .
These houses are ours not theirs .
Reflexive pronoun expresses a noun when the subject’s action affects the subject itself.
For example:
She was looking to herself in the practice.
He prepared himself for the test.
Relative pronoun is a word which is used in relation to a noun and modifies the same noun.
For example:
She is the girl who sings song.
It is the dog which barks at strangers.
Demonstrative pronoun is the pronoun which points to a noun.
For example:
This is a book. That is a car.
