Learning Objective : To represent four digit number on abacus.

What You Need : 36 beads, an abacus with four spikes.

Preparation : Keep the abacus on a flat horizontal
surface, like a table. Starting from extreme right, label D C B A
these spikes as A, B, C and D as shown in the figure (a).

Spike A represents the ones place, spike B represents
the tens place, spike C represents the hundreds place

and spike D represents the thousands place.

            Procedure :
                                                                                           Th H T O
            Represent the number 2463 .
                                                                                                    (a)
Step 1 : Put 3 beads on spike A to represent 3 ones.

            Step 2 : Put beads on spike B to represent tens.6 6

            Step 3 : Put beads on spike on C to represent 4 4 D C B A
                       hundreds.

            Step 4 : Put 2 bead on spike D to represent 2
                       thousands.

            Step 5 : 2 thousands + 4 hundreds + 6 tens + 3 ones
                       = 2463
                                                                                            Th H T O
            Record the activity :
                                                                                                     (b)
The abacus represents the number 2463 as shown in
            figure ( ).b
