Subtraction of 1–Digit Numbers from 2–Digit Numbers

            With Borrowing

            Example : Subtract 8 from 12.

            Write the numbers in columns.
                                                                                                          T O
The number to be subtracted is written below the larger
                                                                                                           1 2
            number.
                                                                                                     – 8
8 ones cannot be subtracted from 2 ones.

T O So, 1 ten can be borrowed from the tens column.
                    0 12
1 2 Now, it has 12 ones in the ones column and 0 tens in

           – 8 the tens column.

                         4 12 Ones – 8 Ones = 4 Ones

                                                           Thus, 12 – 8 = 4.
