We use some terms in division. These terms are :

                             Dividend

                                                  24 ÷ 8 = 3 Quotient

                                                                     Divisior

The number we have to divide is called dividend .

The number with which we divide is called divisor .

The result to a division problem is called quotient .

After dividing if any number is left over, it is called remainder .

Example : Divide 30 by 6 using repeated subtraction method.

            Solution : 30 ÷ 6

                              3 0

                              – 6 1st time

                              2 4

                              – 6 2nd time

                              1 8

                              – 6 3rd time

                              1 2

                              – 6 4th time

                                  6

                              – 6 5th time

                                  0

We subtracted 6 from 30 five times to get 0 (zero). So, our quotient is 5.

            Thus, 30 ÷ 6 = 5.
