Subtraction of 2–Digit Numbers from 3-Digit Numbers

Example : Subtract 86 from 398. 3 9 8

Step 1 : Arrange the numbers in columns. – 8 6

Step 2 : Subtract the digit in the ones column. 3 1 2

8 one – 6 ones = 2 ones

Write 2 ones in ones column.

Step 3 : Subtract the digits in tens column.

9 tens – 8 ones = 1 tens

Write 1 tens in the tens column.

Step 4 : Subtract the digits of hundreds column.

3 – 0 = 3

Write 3 under the hundreds column.

Thus, 398 – 86 = 312
