P. 75
Example : Subtract 345 from 832.
H T O
Step 1 : Arrange the numbers
8 3 2
in their places.
– 3 4 5
Step 2 : At ones place, 2 < 5. So, borrow 1
ten from tens place and add to 2,
then subtract 5. H T O
2 12
(1 ten + 2 ones) – 5 ones 8 3 2
(10 + 2) – 5 – 3 4 5
12 – 5 = 7 7
We write 7 in ones place.
Step 3 : At tens place the digit remains 2. 4 cannot be
subtracted from 2. So, borrow 1 hundred from
H T O hundreds place and add to 2, then subtract 4.
7 12 12
8 3 2 (1 hundred + 2 tens) – 4 tens
– 3 4 5 (10 tens + 2 tens) – 4 tens
8 7 12 tens – 4 tens = 8 tens
We write 8 at tens place.
H T O
Step 4 : At hundreds place, the digit remains 7.
7 12 12
Subtract 3 from it and write at hundreds 8 3 2
place. – 3 4 5
Therefore, 832 – 345 = 487 4 8 7
