Word Problems
Example : Maria has 47 pencils. 23 are long and the rest are short. How
many pencils are short ?
Total number of pencils
Maria has = 4 7
Number of long pencils = – 2 3
Number of short pencils = 2 4
Therefore, Maria has 24 short pencils.
Example : There are 28 birds on a tree. 16 are blue and the rest are
red. How many birds are red ?
Number of birds on the tree = 28

Number of blue birds = 16
Number of red birds = 28 – 16 – 1 6
= 12 1 2
Therefore, the number of red birds is 12.
