G When the action itself is more important than knowing who or what causes it.
Read the following examples:
1. The car was badly damaged in the accident.
2. India was partitioned in 1947.
While using Passive Voice, we should keep the following points in mind:
G Past participle form of the verb alongwith an appropriate form of the auxiliary ‘be’ is
used in passive voice.
G Future continuous tenses and perfect continuous tenses do not have passive forms.
G Ditransitive verbs can have two passive forms.
Read the following example:
He gave me a book .
indirect object direct object
So, it is possible to make two passive sentences.
I was given a book by him. (indirect object as the subject)
A book was given to me by him. (direct object as the subject)
Other common verbs which can have two objects are:
teach, tell, pay, offer, show, ask, give, etc.
G Intransitive verbs (verbs which do not take objects) cannot be expressed in the
passive voice.
Read the following example:
Santanu is going to the market.
(‘is going’ does not have an object)
We will now learn the passive forms of the various tenses.
Tense / Verb Form Active Passive
Simple Present call (s) is / are / am called
Simple Past called was / were called
Simple Future will call will be called
Present Continuous is / are / am calling is / are / am being called
Past Continuous was / were calling was / were being called
Present Perfect has / have called has / have been called
Past Perfect had called had been called
