Modals are verbs used to express the mood or attitude of the speaker.

They are also called modals auxiliaries.

Look! The man is
running with a bag.
He may be a thief.

Yes! I think so. We
should inform the
people about him.

Modals are used to give advice, seek or give permission, make suggestions, make polite
requests, give invitations, etc.

Uses of Modals
G Asking for Things

· Modals such as can , could , may and will are used for asking things.

May is not preferred because it is a very formal
way of asking for things. However, we can use will
if we like.
Read the following examples: Can is used in an informal way.
May is used in a formal way.
1. Can you explain this to me?
Could is used to make a request
2. Could you pass on the jar, please?
in a very polite way.
3. Will you have shut the window?
