We will now study the Past Tense of have .
G The positive form of have is had .
G The negative form of have is had not / did not have .
G The interrogative form of have is had you / did you have ?
G The short forms are –
I had - I’d I had not – I’d not or I hadn’t
Read the following examples:
1. I had a toy.
2. I hadn’t any toy. I did not have any toy.
3. Had you a toy? Did you have a toy?
We will now study the forms of Simple Past Tense .
G Positive statements : Past tense of the verb
G Negative statements : Subject + did not + root form of the verb + ....... (.)
G Interrogative statements : Did + subject + root form of the verb + ........ (?) or
Question word + did + subject + root form of the
verb + ........ ?
Simple Past Tense is used to –
G denote actions that took place at some time in the past and are completed now.
Read the following examples:
1. I completed reading the novel yesterday.
2. The ship sailed yesterday.
G denote some past habits.
Read the following examples:
1. She never arrived late to school.
2. He studied many hours everyday.
We will now study the forms of Past Continuous Tense.
G Affirmative sentences: was/were + -ing form of the verb + ........ (.)
Read the following examples:
1. I was dancing .
2. Elizabeth was reading a book.
G Negative sentences: not is inserted after the first part of the verb.
