3. Verbs of mental states and activity: find, forget, remember, agree, disagree, think,
understand, trust, differ, doubt, believe, disbelieve, imagine, mean, know, recollect,
etc.
Read the following example:
I remember my first day at school. (and not: I am remembering)
4. Verbs showing possession: possess, own, belong, etc.
Read the following example:
I own this bike. (and not: I am owning ...........)
5. Verbs like contain, consist, appear, cost, resemble, etc.
Read the following example:
This class consists of few students. (and not: This class is consisting of .........)
See, Look, Hear, Listen
See and hear do not involve any intention of performing an action. They are, therefore,
non-action verbs and cannot be used in present continuous tense. On the other hand,
looking and listening are action verbs.
Read the following examples:
1. I see a man standing there. He is looking at the house.
2. I hear a lot of noise. Are you listening to me?
Have cannot be used in present continuous tense when it shows possession or condition.
Read the following example:
I have a car. (and not: I am having a car)
But have can be used in present continuous tense when –
G it is used in the sense of take.
Read the following example:
She is having her lunch.
G it refers to some arrangement for the future.
Read the following example:
I am having an exam next week.
