The Position of a Preposition

             The  preposition  is  usually  placed  before  its  object  or  objects  but  when  the  object  is
             relative pronoun, then the preposition is placed at the end.

             Read the following examples:
                   1.  That is the shop, she was looking for       .

                   2.  That is the book, I was looking  .at

             Types of Prepositions

             There are four types of prepositions. They are:

                  Simple Prepositions                           Compound Prepositions

                  Phrase Prepositions                           Double Prepositions


             G     Simple  Prepositions  are  made  up  of  only  one  word.  These  kinds  of  prepositions
                   consist of words like : in, with, at, on, by, from, before, of, after, over, to, upon, etc.
             G     When two simple prepositions are joined before a noun, an adjective or an adverb,
                   it is called compound preposition      .

                   For example:        across, behind, beyond, inside, without, before, etc.

             G     A  phrase  which  consists  of  a  simple  preposition  at  the  end  and  is  used  like  a
                   preposition is called phrase preposition      .
                   For example:       in front of, in lieu of, in order to, with reference to, along with, in
                                      favour of, with an eye to, owing  to, by the light of, etc.

             G     Sometimes,  a  single  preposition  cannot  express  complete  sense.  In  such  cases,
                   double prepositions are used.

                   For example:        within, into, onto, upon, etc.

             The Uses of Different Prepositions

             Use of at / in / on   (for time / for place)
             At:  At  is used for the time of the day.

             Read the following examples:

                   1.  He comes home   Diwali.at
                   2.  Can you meet me   the Clock Tower?at

             On: On is used for the days and dates.
             Read the following examples:

                   1.  He invited me on       Christmas.

                   2.  He will go to Mumbai on         27th December.
