A conjunction is a word that is used to join two words or clauses or sentences and
show the relation between them.
Read the following examples:
1. My brother drew the pictures and coloured them.
2. I enjoy singing but I don’t like dancing.
Conjunctions are used in the following ways:
G We use and to join words, phrases and sentences that have related ideas .
When we use and, the sentences do not have any opposing ideas.
Read the following examples:
1. I ate bread and butter in the morning.
2. I bought some books and some coloured paper.
G We use but to join words, phrases and sentences that have opposite ideas .
When we use but, the sentences show contrast.
Read the following examples:
1. John worked hard but would not win the game.
2. He is poor but honest.
G We use or to join words, phrases and sentences when the sentences show a
choice.
Read the following examples:
1. You could walk up the stairs or use the elevator.
2. Do you like tea coffee? or
G We use because to show a reason .
Read the following examples:
1. Hemant was chosen because he is very tall and strong.
2. I sleep early because I do yoga every morning.
G We use that to relate one clause to another.
Read the following examples:
1. The teacher thinks that Mohit is not hardworking.
2. We all agreed that Ram should be appointed as monitor.
