            Measures of Length

            In  olden  days,  parts  of  the  body  were  used  to  measure  lengths.  Here  are

            some of the units which were used.

            Even  now  you  can  see  the  old  ladies  in  the  house  using  these  units  for
            measuring lengths.


            A span was the distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little

            finger when the fingers were widespread. A cubit was the distance from the

            elbow to the tip of the middle finger, when the hand was outstretched. As
            these units varied from individual to individual, a need was felt for having

            standard units and so metre was invented.
