Looking Back
Measures of Length
In olden days, parts of the body were used to measure lengths. Here are
some of the units which were used.
Digit
Palm
Foot
Foot Span Cubit
Even now you can see the old ladies in the house using these units for
measuring lengths.
A span was the distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little
finger when the fingers were widespread. A cubit was the distance from the
elbow to the tip of the middle finger, when the hand was outstretched. As
these units varied from individual to individual, a need was felt for having
standard units and so metre was invented.
