G  While  adding  suffixes,  if  there  is  a  vowel  before  the  ‘y’,  merely  add  the  letter  or
                  suffix without change.
                  Read the following examples:

                       b y + ing  =  buying  u                       enj y + able  =  enjoyableo
             G  If there is a consonant before the ‘y’, change y to i unless the suffix is -ing          .

                  Read the following examples:
                       fun y + er  =  funnier   n                    marry + age  =  marriage

                       c y + ed  =  cried   r         but            cry + ing  =  crying
                       t y + al  =  trial   r         but            try + ing  =  trying

             G  If a word ends in  , change these letters to   when adding ie  y        -ing .
                  Read the following examples:

                       die + ing  =  dying                           lie + ing  =  lying
             G  If a word consists of only one syllable, it has a consonant at the end and has only one
                  vowel before that consonant, double the final consonant when adding -ing                , -ed , -er ,

                  -en or  -est.
                  Read the following examples:
                       rob + ery  =  robbery                         big + est  =  biggest

                       thin + er  =  thinner                         run + ing  =  running

                       sad + est  =  saddest                         beg + ar  =  beggar
             G  The final consonant is not doubled when the suffix begins with a consonant.

                  Read the following examples:
                       glad + ly  =  gladly

             G  Also, when the accent does not fall on the last syllable, the final consonant is not
                  doubled.
                  Read the following examples:

                       happen + ed  =  happened (accent falls on ‘hap’)
                       differ + ence  =  difference (accent falls on ‘dif’)

             G  If there are two vowels before the final consonant then also the final consonant is not
                  doubled.
                  Read the following examples:

                       cheap + er  =  cheaper                        beat + ing  =  beating

             G  Words ending in   generally double the   when some suffix is added to them.el  I
                  Read the following examples:
                       travel + er  =  traveller                     jewel + er  =  jeweller
