G Semicolon (;)
Semicolon is used to represent a pause of greater importance than that shown by the
commas. Semicolon is used to separate items in a series.
Read the following examples:
1. Class was cancelled today; Mrs. Sharma was home sick.
2. Preeti is quiet and hardworking; Kanika is noisy and active.
G Colon (:)
· Colon is used before a list or quote.
Read the following example:
There are many punctuation marks: period, comma, colon, semicolon, etc.
· A colon is used to separate hours and minutes.
Read the following example:
The time is 1:30.
· A colon is used to separate elements of a mathematical ratio.
Read the following example:
The ratio of men and women is 5:4.
G Apostrophe (’)
Apostrophe is used to show the omission of letters. It is also used to form plural of
words and figures.
Read the following examples:
1. My uncle’s car is more expensive than my father’s.
2. Teachers’ day is celebrated on 5th September.
G Inverted Comma (“...”)
The double inverted commas are used to enclose the actual words of the speaker or
a quotation.
Read the following examples:
1. Mr Verma said, “I am looking for a fully furnished four-room flat.”
2. Subhash Chandra Bose said, “Give me blood, I will give you freedom.”
G Hyphen (-)
Hyphen is used to connect the parts of a compound word or name. It is also used to
connect the parts of a word being broken.
Read the following examples:
1. My mother is talking to my sister-in-law.
2. I need only two-third glass of milk.
