             Direct speech is the speech in its original form while indirect speech is the

             speech in its changed form.




                  Identify  whether  the  speech  below  is  either  direct  speech  or  indirect
                  speech.

                  1.  “I will defeat you!” yelled the man.

                  2.  The man was told to leave the hall.
                  3.  He shouted, “Help!”

                  4.  The policeman gave the lost woman direction.

                  5.  “Excuse me, are you waiting in the queue?” Barry enquired.
                  6.  Chris mumbled that he felt sick.

                  7.  Sailly complained that her shoes were too tight.

                  8.  “I’d like  to  have  a  steak  and  some  chips  please,”  the  customer
                       said to the waiter.







             Direct  speech  is  saying  what  someone  said  without  any  changes.  It  is  always  placed
             inside the quotation marks – “_______”.

             Read the following example:
                   Direct: Peter said, “The bus is late”.

                   Indirect:  Peter said that the bus was late.

             The tense changes when we change the direct speech into indirect speech.

             1.  If the reporting verb is in present tense, the verb in indirect speech is changed to the
                   past tense as under:

                   G   The simple present changes to the simple past.
                         Direct:  He said, “I like South Indian food.”

                         Indirect:  He said that he liked south Indian food.
