The Sentence – Parts
Sentence is made up of two parts –
Subject Predicate
The person or thing that the sentence speaks about is called the subject . What is said
about the subject is called the predicate .
Read the following example: The young girl was reading a book.

Types of Sentences
Sentences are of four types. These are as follows:
Assertive or Declarative Sentences Interrogative Sentences
Exclamatory Sentences Imperative Sentences
G The sentences that state or declare something are called Assertive or Declarative
sentences. They can be either affirmative or negative.
Read the following examples:
1. He is loyal. (affirmative )
2. I have no money in my purse. (negative )
G In Interrogative sentences , a question is always being asked. It ends with a question
mark (?). In interrogative sentences we keep the helping verb before the subject.
Read the following examples:
1. Where is your book? (wh-question )
2. Is he driving a car? (yes or no question )
A wh-question begins with a question word, like who, why, where, when, what, etc.
A yes or no question can only be answered in ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
G An Exclamatory sentence expresses a strong feeling of wonder, joy or sorrow. An
exclamatory sentence ends with an exclamation mark (!).
Read the following examples:
1. How big the stadium is!
2. What a great singer he is!
In the above sentences, the order of the words is different from that of assertive sentences.
To change an exclamatory sentence into an assertive sentence, we have to follow the
given rules.
G Restore the original word - order.
G Add a word to express the feeling or emotion if required.
