27 Renewable Energy
Renewable energy is made from resources that nature will replace, like
wind, water and sunshine.
Renewable energy is also called ‘‘clean energy’’ or ‘‘green power’’
because it doesn’t pollute the air or the water.
Let us read about some sources of renewable energy.
Wind energy has been used to grind crops, to
pump water and to cut wood at sawmills. In
many countries, even today, windmills are
used to generate electricity.
Hydropower or hydroelectricity refers to the
conversion of energy from flowing water into
electricity. It is considered a renewable energy
source because the water cycle is constantly
renewed by the sun. Hydropower is the
leading source of renewable energy and
provides more than 97% of all energy produced
by renewable sources.
The sun is the major source of power in the
world. The sun’s energy is inexhaustible
resource. Sunlight helps plants to produce food
as well as release oxygen that we breathe. The
solar energy evaporates water in rivers, oceans
as well as lakes for forming clouds which are
then turned into rain.
