Misti : Oh, my God!
Mohit : Daddy, let’s send Misti to a school in Tibet.
Misti : I wouldn’t mind going to a school in Tibet. I wouldn’t then have to listen to your
remarks, Mohit.
Daddy : China is also a tea-drinking country. China knew tea drinking 4,000 years ago.
Tea went to the western countries about 300 years ago. We in India caught the
tea-drinking habit from England. We have tea gardens in India. India and Sri
Lanka export the tea to the western countries.
Misti : Why do we call tea ‘chay’ Daddy?
Daddy : Tea was once pronounced as Tey Tey. comes from the Chinese Cahy. So our cha
is more correct than tea.
Mohit : Chay in tray!
pickers : those who gather tea-leaves
Misti : How is tea in its market form made?
Daddy : There are pickers in a tea-garden. They pick the young tea-leaves. Two leaves
and a bud (unopened flower) — that’s how they pick. These picked leaves are
spread on trays to dry. The dry leaves are rolled. They undergo heating and
flavouring treatments. Then they are ready for the market.
