She heard about heaven and
wanted to go too. Then her
husband wanted to go, and then
more neighbours came. All of
them wanted to go to heaven.
Airavat came to Birju’s farm
again that night. Birju held on to
his tail. Gomti held on to Birju.
Gomti’s neighbours held on to
Gomti. And so on, until there
was a long line of people holding
on to one another when Airavat
rose up into the air.
Airavat rose up, and the line
of people went up into the air with rose up : went up
him. They were half-way to heaven
when Gomti asked her husband, ‘How big were the roses in heaven?’ Birju said,
“So big,” and took his hands off the tail, to show her how big they were. When
he took his hands off the tail, Birju started falling. And all the people from the
village fell with him back on to the earth with a big THUD! They never got to see
heaven after all.
