Birju was a farmer. He lived with his wife, Gomti, in a small village. He grew
sugarcane on his farm. It was a very sweet sugarcane.
One day, Lord Indra visited the earth. He saw Birju’s sugarcane field. He broke
off a piece of cane and tasted it.
“Wonderful sugarcane! It’s so sweet and juicy. Airavat will love it,” he said to
himself.
Airavat was Indra’s elephant. The next night, Indra came down to Birju’s field
with Airavat. The elephant ate a lot of sugarcane.

The next day, Birju went to his field. He saw that somebody had eaten a lot of
sugarcane during the night. The same thing happened the next night and the
night after that. When he looked at the field in the morning, a lot of sugarcane
was gone.
