1. The object of the verb in the active voice becomes the subject of the verb in the
passive voice.
2. The subject of the verb in the active voice becomes a prepositional phrase in the
passive voice: by + subject
3. The verb in the active voice is changed to a suitable auxiliary + past participle form
of the verb.
We will now learn active and passive voice in different tenses.
G Simple Present Tense
Active Voice: root form of the verb, sometimes with -s or -es
Passive Voice: is / are / am + past participle form of the verb
Read the following examples:
1. He makes pots. (active voice)
2. Pots are made by him. (passive voice)
G Simple Past Tense
Active Voice: past tense of the verb
Passive Voice: was / were + past participle form of the verb
Read the following examples:
1. He made pots. (active voice)
2. Pots were made by him. (passive voice)
G Simple Future Tense
Active Voice: shall / will + root form of the verb
Passive Voice: shall / will + be + past participle form of the verb
Read the following examples:
1. He will make pots. (active voice)
2. Pots will be made by him. (passive voice)
G Present Continuous Tense
Active Voice: is / are / am + -ing form of the verb
Passive Voice: is / are / am + being + past participle form of the verb
Read the following examples:
1. He is making pots. (active voice)
2. Pots are being made by him. (passive voice)
