P. 8

A sentence is a group of words giving a complete thought. A sentence must contain
             a subject and a verb.

A complete sentence contains the following:

G A capital letter at the beginning and a full stop (.), a question mark (?) or an

exclamation mark (!) at the end.

G A verb (action or doing word).

             Read the following examples:

             1. The boy is playing football.

             2. He is my brother.

The above examples are sentences because they give a complete meaning.

Sentences are divided into two parts.

                   The Subject The Predicate

G Subject can be defined as the ‘who’ or the ‘what’ of a sentence. It can be a
                   noun or a pronoun.

G Predicate tells us exactly what the subject does. It establishes a relationship

between the subject and the action performed. It always contains a verb.

             Read the following examples:

             1. Tigers are becoming extinct .

             2. Ritu went to the market.

The words that are highlighted in blue are subjects .

The words that are highlighted in green are predicates .

             Phrases

A group of words which do not give the complete sense is called a phrase . It can be
used at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of a sentence.

             Read the following examples:
             1. in the park

             2. in the east
