Modal verbs are used to express ability, possibility, to ask for permission, to

             show necessity etc. Modal verbs are also called helping verbs                     .
             Some modal verbs are:


                   can        could             may              might            needn’t
                   will       would             should           must             shouldn’t


             Uses of Modals

             Can is used to express the ability to do something in the present.

             Read the following examples:

                   1.  I can    speak English.

                   2.  The ostrich can        run very fast.


             Could is used      to express the ability, to make suggestion and request in the past.

             Read the following examples:

                   1.  When I was younger I could               run fast.
                   2.  Could you please buy a ticket for me?


             May is used to ask or give permission to do something in the present.

             Read the following examples:

                   1.  May      I go to the cinema?

                   2.  It may     rain tomorrow.


             Might is used to tell the possibility. (less possible than may)

             Read the following examples:

                   1.  It might     rain in ten minutes.

                   2.  I might     go on holiday to Australia next year.


             Will / Would are used to ask to do something or make a suggestion / offer.
             Read the following examples:

                   1.  Will    you please shut the door?

                   2.  Would       you like to take coffee?
