47 Our Scientists
From chemistry to biology to physics and much more, scientists have helped we learn
more about the world around us the universe and why things work the way they do!
Let us read the given information to know about a few of them.
Marie Curie discovered radium in 1898. Because of constant
exposure to the radiation, she suffered from leukemia and died in
1934. She received two Nobel Prizes — one in Physics and the
other in Chemistry.
In studying X-rays, Rosalind Franklin was the first person to
discover that they could be used to take imaging of crystalized
solid matter. In 1951, working at king’s college in London, she
and John Randall used her X-ray techniques to image DNA
structure.
In the field of electro-magnetics, Michael Faraday is known for
making remarkable discoveries. He damaged his eyes in a
nitrogen chloride explosion and suffered the rest of his life from
chemical poisoning.
In the year 1772, Antoine Lavoisier performed an experiment on
a diamond, in which they put it in a glass jar and focused a large
magnifying glass on it under the sun. He found that the diamond
ended up burning away to nothing. Importantly, Lavoisier
noticed that the weight of the jar didn’t decrease, which later
helped realise the law of conservation of mass-which states that
mass cannot change in a system that is unaffected by matter and
energy changes.
Karl Scheele was a famous pharmaceutical chemist. Who used to
experiment his discoveries. He died in this process of experiment.
He died of symptoms which looked like mercury poisoning.
