P. 47
In the squdgy river, squdgy : shallow
oozely : muddy
Down the oozely bank, ripples : waves
reeds : plants on the river bank
Where the ripples shiver,
kippo : a flower
And the reeds are rank. awful : fearful
Where the purple kippo ,
Makes an awful fuss,
Lives the Hip-hip-hippo,
Hippo-pot-a-mus.
Broad his back and steady,
Broad and flat his nose,
Sharp and keen and ready,
Little eyes are those.
You would think him dreaming,
Where the mud is deep,
It is only seeming,
He is not asleep.
Better not disturb him,
There would be an awful fuss,
If you touched the Hippo,
Hippo-pot-a-mus.
