Andy waited at the counter for some time, but soon found that he was not going to get the
letter for four pence. He then started for the village.

Mr Egan was waiting impatiently for Andy’s return. At last, he appeared. “Is there a
letter for me?” asked Mr Egan.
“There is one, sir” said Andy.
“Then give it to me,” said Mr Egan.
“I haven’t got it, sir,” said Andy.
“What do you mean?” asked Mr Egan angrily.
“The postmaster wouldn’t give it to me,” replied Andy.
“Why wouldn’t he give it to you?” asked Mr Egan.
“He wanted eleven pence for it. I refused to give him eleven pence,” said Andy.
“Why?” asked Mr Egan.
“Because he was trying to cheat you,” said Andy. “I saw him giving a letter to Mr Durfy
for four pence.”
“Perhaps my letter was a bigger one,” said Mr Egan.
“But why didn’t you pay what he asked for?” said Mr Egan angrily. “Ride back at once to
the postmaster office and bring me the letter. Don’t come back with any more excuses or I’II
kill you!”

Andy rode off once more and soon arrived at the post office. He went up to the counter
and said, “I have come for that letter.” There were two others at the counter waiting to get
their letters and so the postmaster asked Andy to wait for some time.
