One night, a thief
went to a rich man’s
house. He stole some
gold and ran away. Just
then, the rich man woke
up. He saw the thief
running away. “Thief!
Thief!” he shouted.
“Catch him. He has
stolen my gold.”
Many people came
running. They all chased
the thief. But, the thief ran
away. They could not catch
him in the dark.
Everyone came back. chased : followed to catch
How should they catch the mending : repairing
yelled : shouted
thief now? One of the men said,
“I have seen the thief. I know who he is. His name is Kallu. He lives near the
pond. Tomorrow you can go and catch him. I shall not come with you, for I have
to take my buffalo to the doctor.”
“Very well,” they said, “We shall go and catch that Kallu. And we shall give
him a good bea ng.”
Next day, they went to the pond. They saw a small hut near the water. They
went inside and saw a man. He was mending his fishing net.
They caught the man and started to beat him. “Kallu, you thief!” they
yelled, “You have stolen gold from the rich man’s house? We are going to beat
you. Take this and that!” and they gave him a good bea ng. But, to their surprise
the man began to laugh. The more they beat him, the more he laughed.
