One night, a thief
             went to a rich man’s

             house. He stole some

             gold and ran away. Just
             then, the rich man woke

             up. He saw the thief

             running away. “Thief!
             Thief!” he shouted.

             “Catch him. He has

             stolen my gold.”

                    Many people came

             running. They all chased

the thief. But, the thief ran
             away. They could not catch

             him in the dark.

Everyone came back. chased : followed to catch
How should they catch the mending : repairing
                                                                                       yelled : shouted
thief now? One of the men said,

“I have seen the thief. I know who he is. His name is Kallu. He lives near the
pond. Tomorrow you can go and catch him. I shall not come with you, for I have

to take my buffalo to the doctor.”

“Very well,” they said, “We shall go and catch that Kallu. And we shall give

             him a good bea ng.”

Next day, they went to the pond. They saw a small hut near the water. They

went inside and saw a man. He was mending his fishing net.

They caught the man and started to beat him. “Kallu, you thief!” they
yelled, “You have stolen gold from the rich man’s house? We are going to beat

you. Take this and that!” and they gave him a good bea ng. But, to their surprise

the man began to laugh. The more they beat him, the more he laughed.
