8 WAN
WAN stands for Wide Area Network . Computers in a
WAN are spread over a large geographical area.
This area can be as large as a country or the entire
world. Computers in a WAN communicate using
telephone lines, satellite links etc. The internet is a
wide area network. Millions of computers are
connected to it. With internet we can share
information, view email, discuss favourite topics with
people etc.
8 PAN
PAN stands for Personal Area Network . It is intended for
personal use within a range of a few ten meters. Mainly,
the technologies used for creating personal area networks
are wireless. A notable example of WPAN is the Bluetooth
technology, mostly found on portable devices like
smartphones, laptops, tablets, wearables etc.
8 LAN
LAN or Local Area Network links network devices in such a way that personal computer
and workstations can share data, tools and programs. Data transmits at a very fast rate
as the number of computers linked are limited. LAN’s covers smaller geographical area
and are privately owned. One can use it for an office building, home, hospital, schools
etc. LAN is easy to design and maintain.
A communication medium used for LAN has twisted pair cables and coaxial cables. It
covers a short distance, and so the error and noise are minimised.
