to allow others to follow their religion. I want my
rights to be safe, I must perform my duties
honestly. In order to make the citizens aware of
their duties towards the state, the constitution
lays down some duties which every citizen of
India is expected to perform. They are:
1. To abide by the constitution and respect the
National Flag and National Anthem.
2. To cherish the noble ideals of freedom
struggle.
3. To uphold the sovereignty, unity and integ-
rity of India.
4. To defend the country and render national
service when called for.
5. To promote the feelings of common brother-
hood among the people of India.
6. To preserve the rich heritage and composite
culture of the nation.
7. Protection of natural resources. Natural
environment and to have compassion for
living creatures.
8 To develop scientific temper, humanism and
spirit of reform.
9. Protection of public property and to abjure
violence.
10. To strive for excellence in all collective and
individual activities.
CONSTITUTION OF INDIA
Preamble
WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly
resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN
SOCIALIST SECUL AR DEMOCRATIC
REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizen;
JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and
worship;
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to
promote among then all

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this
twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do
HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO
OURSELVES THIS CONSTIUTION.
DIRECTIVE PRINCIPLES OF STATE
POLICY
The founding fathers of our constitution were
worried that India was economically a backward
country. Most of its population was ignorant,
superstitious and suffered from many social evils.
Hence, they embodied the objectives and ideals
that the Union and State governments must bear
in mind while formulating policies and making
laws.
Chapter IV of the constitution contains the
Directive Principles of State Policy (Articles
36-51). Dr Ambedkar rightly described them as a
“novel features”.
PRINCIPLES AIMING AT THE
ESTABLISHMENT OF A WELFARE STATE
1. The State shall provide adequate means of
livelihood for all its citizens.
2. The State shall manage the ownership,
distribution and control of national wealth
and material resources in the best interest of
common good.
3. All men and women shall receive equal
wages for equal work.
