              Improper Fraction : What is : 1 + = ?
                                                    4

                                          4 9 13
                                   It is : + =
                                          4 4 4
But, for everyday use, people understand mixed fractions better.

                                                          1 9
For example : It is easier to say “I ate 2 sausages”, than “I ate sausages”.
                                                          4 4

            Finding Equivalent Fractions

                              1 2 4
The fractions and are equivalent fractions. If we observe carefully, we can see
                                ,
                              2 4 8
                                                                               1 2
that if we multiply the numerator and denominator of by 2, we can get . Also, if we
                                                                               2 4
                                                                 4 2
divide the numerator and denominator of by 2, we can get . So, we have to follow
                                                                 8 4

these methods of finding equivalent fractions of a given fraction.

F To find an equivalent fraction, multiply the numerator and denominator of the

fraction by the same non-zero number.

F To find an equivalent fraction, divide the numerator and denominator of the

fraction by the same non-zero number which is a factor of both.

In order to get more than one equivalent fraction for a given fraction, we can build
equivalent fractions through multiples. To do so, we find the required number of

multiples of the numerator and denominator and arrange them as fractions.

                                                                 2
Example : Find an equivalent fraction of .
                                                                 3

                                                                                        2
Solution : We multiply the numerator and denominator of by 2.
                                                                                        3
                                                           2 × 2 4
                                                                   =
                                                           3 × 2 6

                                     4 2
Hence, is an equivalent fraction of .
                                     6 3

                                                              2
Example : Find equivalent fraction of till the fourth place.
                                                              3

Solution : We first find the multiples of the numerator till the fourth place. So, we

                            have 2, 4, 6 and 8.
