decimal points so that the whole number part and the decimal part could also be lined
up. Then, we add them.

Following are the steps for addition of decimals:

Step 1 : Change to like decimals.
Step 2 : Line up the decimal points, i.e., the addends are placed one below the other

such that the tens digit is below tens, ones is below ones, decimal points
below the decimal point, tenths below the tenths and so on.

Step 3 : Add as in case of whole numbers. Carry wherever necessary.

Step 4 : Place the decimal point in the sum directly below the decimal point in the
addends.

Example : Let us add 93.59 and 4.7. + 4.7

Solution : Step 1 : We put the digits according to the place value so
that decimal points are vertically aligned.
93.59

Step 2 : Change the decimals to like decimals.

Step 3 : Now, we add and regroup if needed. 93.59

+ 4.70
Step 4 : We will place the decimal point in the answer at
98.29
the same place as the numbers above it.

Example : Let us add 6.9 and 7.06.

Solution : 6 . 9 0

+ 7 . 0 6
