Factor Tree

There are many numbers which can be multiplied by more than 2 factors.

Let us consider the number 16.

            16 can be built with 2 factors ® 2 × 8

            16 can be built with 3 factors ® 2 × 2 × 4

            16 can be built with 4 factors ® 2 × 2 × 2 × 2

Factor tree help us in finding different ways of making number by multiplying.

« Factor tree gives as many branches as possible.

« The encircled number can be broken up further.

« We stop giving branches, i.e., breaking up the numbers when we need to

                 use 1 as a factor.

            Example : Make the factor tree of a. 18 b. 36 36

            Solution : a. b. 2 × 18

                                                  18

                                            2 × 9 2 × 9

                                                   3 × 3 3 × 3

                 Carry On

Make two different factor trees for 72.

                                        72 72

            Common Factors

Common factors of two or more numbers are those numbers which divide
            all the numbers exactly.
